Accident simulations put safety skills to the test
Algol Chemicals together with Securitas recently held safety exercises for employees at the warehouse facilities at the Port of Turku. The first part of the exercises tested operating procedures in a simulated accident involving a person who is hit by a heavy barrel falling off a fork-lift truck. The second part took part in a fire simulator to practice fire fighting skills using fire blankets and extinguishers on a burning stove and person, as well as using handheld fire extinguishers on a fire in an electrical cabinet and over a flat area.
“The employees who participated in the training knew how to handle the situations as required. Not once did we have to step in and interrupt the simulations to prevent an incident that in real life would have injured the victim or person responding to the accident. They all had good fire extinguishing skills, and the trainers never had to take over.
The participants were all very positive an open-minded about the training and the follow-up discussions. Site Manager Kimmo Koskinen was very encouraging about safety issues, and all the participants were extremely interested and motivated in taking part in the safety training,” reports Karim Boughanmi, who oversaw the training. At the same time Karim confirmed the high level of safety awareness at the Algol Chemicals warehouse facilities at the Port of Turku.
